Alia Malley’s Captain of the Dead Sea was first presented in a solo exhibition at Solan Projects, Los Angeles in 2015.
Paul Smith has invited Malley to reimagine her project as a collaborative special edition. The exhibition explores the link between fact and fiction with a series of colour-washed landscapes primarily shot on location in the deserts of California and the Southwestern United States.
Malley’s obsessions with pink deserts first occurred after watching a screening of Walter DeMaria’s 1969 experimental film Hard Core. The vintage Ektachrome print had been improperly restored, resulting in the film having what Alia described as ‘an incredible magenta hue’.
This exhibition is free.
