Caroline Issa’s edit is all about wardrobe classics and investment pieces. We caught up with her to find out what to look for when shopping for beautiful, timeless items of clothing that transcend seasons, and why good quality wardrobe staples are now more important than ever.
What are some of the key pieces every girl should own?
I definitely approach my wardrobe much like a wine cellar – investing in classic pieces that will age well and remain beautiful and delicious with time. So key pieces like a green parka or belted cashmere coat are perfect for layering over anything, and knitwear in a range of deep, rich colours mean layering within tailoring or over dresses.
– and for men?
Men have got a plethora of great layering options, and I love how menswear embraces colour this season. So good quality t-shirts in rich colours layered beneath workwear with pockets or coats that can be layered over casual weekend wear are perfect for the return to offices. And a good rainproof outerwear piece is always useful. Again, parkas and military-style jackets in rich greens are always worthwhile investment pieces that are incredibly versatile.
Have the recent changes in our work and social habits made timeless clothing more relevant?
Absolutely. We’ve also had a chance to see how our earth is so much happier when we slow down, make less waste, and that applies to making smart wardrobe investments. It becomes less about « the newest, the trendiest piece » and more about a sweater that will last you a lifetime in a colour that makes you happy, or a dress in buttery soft leather that is a great fit that will never go out of style.
Any advice on how to dress a classic piece up or down to keep it feeling fresh?
I think accessories can change an outfit in an instant – add a pair of heels instead of Chelsea boots to a dress and you are instantly cocktail-ready rather than weekend strolling. Use jewellery to dress outfits up to add an embellishment!
Do you have any tips for styling a much-loved jacket or pair of jeans to create new looks season after season?
Don’t feel like there are any rules these days – wear a short summer dress over jeans for the autumn, and a sweater on top of that – have fun with layering and think outside the box. I love layering a few jackets on top of each other, or denim jackets undercoats for a bit of texture and colour depth.
When shopping, how do you know a piece will have staying power and not feel dated a few years down the line?
I think it’s more about taking time and consideration with what you invest in – mull it over, think about how it fits in with other pieces you already have in your wardrobe, don’t rush into it! If you keep thinking about it or making new outfits like a Tetris puzzle out of the things you already have with it, you know you’ll be able to keep it versatile for years to come!
