Cissy Wears

Cissy Wears is a new kind of concept store, with kids at its heart, and good design for the modern family firmly in mind.

Owner and founder Nicola Eyre took time out to give us an insight into the Cissy Wears ethos, and her thoughts on life at Coal Drops Yard.

What can people expect from your store?

Cissy Wears is a haven of design-led products for the modern family; a place for people who don’t want to compromise on their taste just because they’ve had kids.  But… it’s not just for kids! We’ve got a range of gorgeous homewares, accessories, fragrances and artisan chocolate. We sell goods across a broad range of prices from a £1 pin badge to a gorgeous £245 throw from Slowdown Studio.

What can people find at Cissy Wears that they can’t find anywhere else?

We pride ourselves on being innovative and are often the first to discover new products and brands. It’s a carefully curated edit of the some of the most beautiful and sustainable brands from around the world including Saga Copenhagen, Heimess, Neu Oils and many more, all put together in a perfect mix of muted tones and brilliant design.

What inspired you to start the shop?

I was offered a position with a large online children’s retailer after an unexpected change in career, but it sadly fell through. By that time, with two kids of my own for whom I struggled to find things I loved, I was hooked on children’s fashion and decided to start up on my own.

Describe the Cissy Wears ethos.

We know that you have to buy a lot of things for growing kids, so we try to keep everything as sustainable as possible and care for the planet your little one is growing up in. Our new bioplastic range is made from 100% renewable plant-based materials and is completely recyclable.

Describe your perfect day out at Coal Drops Yard

I could spend all day here, it’s such a brilliant space and vibe. Even when it’s busy it’s not overcrowded. As a frequent forgetter of my lunch, I can recommend a pulled pork kubalah from Coal Office, or a grilled cheese toastie and truffle fries, washed down with an Aperol Spritz from Morty & Bobs. Redemption Roasters do the best coffee, and I’m partial to a Longboys peanut butter jelly donut too (I basically spend my day thinking about food).

I love to browse the wonderful art space in Cos, can always find beautiful homewares in Earl of East, something cool in Kitchen Provisions, or quirky in S120, beautiful and classic in Margaret Howell or APC. I fuel my plant obsession in Botanical Boys, and finish my day giving my jawline a thorough workout at FaceGym.

Which products currently available at Cissy Wears best sum up the store?

The Maed For Mini Leading Leopard Long Coat

This is going to look fantastic on whoever wears it, it’s bold and screams style in buckets. Deep pockets and a tie to the front as well as buttons to help keep the chill out, probably not going to be needed though because the glow you’ll get from wearing something this stylish is more than enough to keep warm!

The Bioplastic Sugarcane Coffee Set

Role play is largely about interacting with others. It helps develop the child’s social skills, such as their ability to share and work together. Made of bioplastic (90% sugarcane). It carries the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and does not contain harmful substances such a phthalates, perfume, BPA or endocrine-disruptive substances. In a palette of gorgeous muted tonal colours and packed in a recycled cardboard box.

The Miffy First light lamp

These sweet and serene Miffy lights have become a design classic, and they now come with a smaller companion. This charming lighting piece exudes a soft, warm glow – ideal for storytelling with the young ones at bed time, or even as décor for any modern interior.

Any guilty pleasures?

I feel guilty about working too hard and not seeing my kids – but never about music or food or drink – do more of what you love!
